There are probably only about half a dozen of these
characters left that have the possibility of transmitting the Pennance name
down to future generations. Well, in
the grand scheme of things, what does it matter? Probably not at all.
It would be sad if the name died out though because
probably no one would have any interest at all in the name or where it came from
or the history of the family.
Now lads, listen up, it may be that your future partner
dislikes the surname Pennance. It may
be they want to saddle your offspring with some double-barrelled monstrosity
like Fortescue-Pennance. It may be that
marriage is irrelevant to you and naming conventions meaningless. I am in no position to argue with that. But if all or any of that is true, before
you go down that route, just have another browse of this site and ask yourself
‘Do I really want to see such a unique and characterful surname go the way of
the dodo’?
